SmartLock
by Access Keys
 |
Smartlock is an attractively priced alternative to the Smart
Logon system from Microsoft for Windows NT, 2000 and XP and
controls access to computers by using smart card technologies.
Smartlock interfaces with the current “winlogon”
system and greatly enhances network security. Due to the simplicity
of the system and the extra security added, Smartlock is suitable
for a single workstation or company network. |
How does it work?
| The username, password and domain, which the user
is normally required to enter when logging on to a workstation,
are held on a secure smart card.
The system works in such a way that when the user wishes
to login, they insert the Smartlock card into a reader attached
to the workstation.
|
 |
|
When the Smartlock card is removed the workstation locks itself
and if a screen saver is loaded it is also activated a few seconds
later. Unlocking the workstation is simply a matter of re-inserting
the same Smartlock card which re-activates the login sequence.
If a different Smartlock card is used the system logs the original
user off and the new user starts a new session. |
So why is this more Secure?
In order to logon to the workstation the user is required to have the
Smartlock card and to know the valid PIN code and the workstation
will never prompt the user for the standard Username, Password
and domain. Only the user-codes loaded onto the card can be
used with the card. Without being able to logon to the workstation
the server data is secure from prying eyes.
