Co*STAR provides a series of API's that can either be embedded in the host application or activated by a "SCREEN WATCH" feature external to the application code. These API's can actually control the Windows client environment from the host regardless of the host system's source code, platform type or operating system. This functionality literally lets the host application become an active "participant" in a client/server application. While not every one will wish to make use of this capability in every application, the functionality makes it possible to not only extend the life of the existing application but to significantly improve and enhance it. The need for rewriting the entire application disappears.

Co*STAR offers additional power by being equally open at the PC level. allows completely documented and robust Windows external DLL, VBX, OCX, and DDE interfaces to add still more functionality to your system. For example, the external DLL provides a Visual Basic custom control. With it, specialized Visual Basic routines such as scientific imaging and database integration can be accessed. It is even possible to create the entire client front-end with Visual Basic. These capabilities can be used to integrate utilities written in other programming languages such as C and C++ or access PC applications like Microsoft Word or Excel. The whole PC world becomes available to your new client/server application.

It isn't necessary to change your host applications to benefit from Co*STAR. Any legacy application can have full Windows functionality including: toolbars, message boxes, button bars, pull down menus, list boxes, color control, and multimedia support. A complete user environment can be developed by adding buttons or pull down menus to launch other PC applications like Word or Excel.

Co*STAR is server ready allowing all program and configuration files to be housed in a single location on your Windows NT, 2000, or XP server.

Co*STAR is also fully compatible with environments running Citrix Metaframe or Windows Terminal Server. Specific benefits include:

Clearview Software FTP (CSFTP)

Co*STAR includes an easy-to-use FTP utility for transferring files from your local PC to a networked server. CSFTP features an explorer-like interface complete with drag & drop, context menus, and multi-threading for maximum performance.

Clearview Software LPD (CSLPD)

In addition to full support for passthrough printing, Co*STAR offer a Unix style LPR/LPD utility for remote printing. The utility takes only seconds to configure and appears as an icon in your Desktop system tray.
